They are up in the hundred thousands, so going to be quite old, someone may have a more definite answer though.

Late 70s, 1978 or 1979. As far as I can remember, anyway. Could be 1980, but I don't think so.

Oh god that makes me feel old , elaine and I owned a topper as a holiday boat in the 1990s and it was a 8000 number

Just went for a read of the CA site and they say nearly 50,000 have been built. Numbers slowed dramatically in the 21st century.
