The Montego Bay Yacht Club and Manuka Sports Event Management announced today that the 35th edition of the Pineapple Cup - Montego Bay Race, will start on January 22 and 23, 2022 from Miami.

The 2022 edition of the Pineapple Cup will once again have two starts: the PHRF on Saturday, January 22nd and the ORC and Multihull fleets on Sunday, January 23rd. 2019 was the first year that multiple starts were implemented as a way to have the majority of the fleet finishing at the same time.

New for 2022 will be the way the most coveted trophy, the Silver Perpetual Pineapple Cup is awarded. Under the new rules, 1st overall corrected time will be awarded to the winner of the most competitive fleet. The most competitive fleet will be calculated by averaging the corrected time deltas of the first 80% of the fleet. The fleet with the lowest average deltas will be eligible to win the Pineapple Cup.

At 811 nautical miles, the Pineapple Cup is one of the oldest offshore yachting races and it also has one of the oldest yachting trophies. The trophy dates back to 1961 where it was handcrafted in London. Throughout the years, the trophy has been awarded to some of the most well known names in yachting including: John Kilroy, Ted Turner and Robert F Johnson. The winner of the 2019 Governor General's Trophy was awarded to the first place team in IRC, which was British entry Lady Mariposa onboard their Ker46.

The current course record was set in 2019 at two days, 0 hours, seven minutes and 44 seconds by Argo a Mod70.

Montego Bay Yacht Club Rear Commodore Nigel Knowles,"Although unfortunate that we needed to postpone the race this past January, we are even more excited to continue the tradition of this historic yacht race now in 2022. The enthusiasm at the Montego Bay Yacht Club continues to grow each edition as we see more and more international teams, with some of the best ocean racers, descending on our beautiful club. Our members are once again looking forward to providing the legendary hospitality that the Montego Bay Yacht Club and Jamaica have become renowned for and we look forward to seeing you in 2022!"
