2026 Warren Jones International Match Racing Regatta - Day 3

by John Roberson 29 Jan 06:16 PST 26-30 January 2026

Dane Matias Rossing was the performer of the day as the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta moved through from the last of the round robin series, past the quarter final and into the semi-finals. The young skipper from the Royal Danish Yacht Club started the event cautiously, winning only two races on the first day, then chalking up four more wins on the second day.

Today, the third and penultimate day of the regatta he was on fire. In the final heat of the round robin he became the first skipper to beat Marcello Torre in the series. Then in the quarter finals eliminated New Zealand's Josh Hyde 3 - 1, before going on to build a 2 - 0 semi-final lead over the defending champion Cole Tapper from Sydney's Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.

Coming ashore to high fives with his coach Luke Payne and with a smile from ear to ear he commented, "It has taken us time to learn the boats and to learn to work together as a crew. We have never all sailed together." His team of Magnus Overbeck, Emil Wolfgang, Rasmus Taato and Ollie Gilmour have certainly melded into a smooth unit, with fast spinnaker hoists, slick tacks and cool tactical decisions.

The semi-finals are first to three points series, so Rossing is on match point, while in the other pairing Marcello Torre and Daniel Kemp are level on one point each. With light winds forecast for the morning of the final day no one is safe, with the semi-finals scheduled to be finished before lunch, so hopefully the final will be held in the sea breeze.

With the exception of Rossing losing one race to Josh Hyde, the quarter finals were pretty straight forward affairs, Torre beat Zac West, Cole Tapper beat Ethan Fong and Daniel Kemp beat Ben Crafoord all 3 - 0.
