59th Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship announces 2026 Invitees

After five years of dominance by Jeffrey Petersen (USA) and Cole Tapper (AUS), who each won twice, a new generation of youth match racing teams will take center stage in the 59th Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship, July 27-August 1, 2026.

The invitees are led by the three top-ranked skippers in the World Sailing Youth Match Racing rankings (for sailors under 23 years of age), Ethan Fong (NZL), Daniel Kemp (AUS), and Josh Hyde (NZL).

Also among the favorites are Christian Prendergast (USA), the 10th ranked skipper on the WS Open (non-age limited) world rankings who has also been invited to this year's Congressional Cup, a World Match Racing Tour event, next month. In only one case in the GovCup's 58-year history has a GovCup winner won the Congressional Cup serving as skipper or tactician while still eligible for the Governor's Cup. Prendergast will be joined by Morgan Pinckney (USA), three-time Governor's Cup podium finisher, with James Hayhoe (AUS), and Sam Scott (NZL), rounding out the five-team contingent from Australia and New Zealand.

Other international invitees include Theo Westerlind (SWE) who barely missed the semi-finals in his first Governor's Cup in 2025, Andre Deseau, (CAN) two-time Canadian Intercollegiate Match Racing Champion, and Victor Christian Melchior (DEN) who will sail in his second Governor's Cup.

Balboa Yacht Club will be represented by Siena Nichols (USA), currently ranked 6th in the World Sailing standings, who at 17 will be sailing in her third Governor's Cup with some impressive victories on her resume including Long Beach Yacht Club's Mayor's and Dickson Cups. She is tough on the racecourse despite her relatively less experience and earned herself the title "the teenage assassin" from fellow competitors.

The twelfth and final invitation will go to the winner of the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup in late June at Oakcliff Sailing, Oyster Bay, New York. If Nichols wins the series, the next highest Rose Cup finisher would be invited.

"This was the toughest selection process in years and maybe ever," said Christine Gribben, BYC Rear Commodore and Governor's Cup Chair. "We had more than 30 requests for invitations, three times the available 11 invites. With a combined 11 requests from Australia and New Zealand alone, we had to turn down some exceptional sailors."

The Governor's Cup, is the oldest youth (under 23 years old) match racing championship in the world and includes among its alumni, many of the finest sailors in the world led by two-time America's Cup winner James Spithill (AUS). This year, all three finalists for the prestigious U.S. Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, Justin Callahan, Taylor Canfield and Paul Cayard, have sailed in the GovCup. And last month at the premier pre-Olympic event, the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Regatta in Mallorca, Spain, the 2nd and 4th place finishers in the extremely competitive 49er class, Nevin Snow (USA) and Harry Price (AUS) are both two-time Governor's Cup winners.

Gribben summed up, "We are proud that so many of our alumni continue to distinguish themselves in all aspects of our sport. We look forward to welcoming the new guard to Balboa Yacht Club for the 59th GovCup in July."
