The brand-new Stralsund-based boat builder, Pioneer Yachts, has emerged to fill a gap in the market. When looking for a reliable, solar-electric yacht designed for reliable operation at sea, founder and CEO Mike Frank realised the perfect model for him did not yet exist. So, he decided to create a team of highly-experienced engineers to build it for himself. The result? A new generation of solar-electric yachts.

  • Stralsund-based company founded by engineer and entrepreneur Mike Frank
  • Engineered and made in Germany, built for real use
  • Models powered by a coherent, reliable solar-electric system
  • First model is PY60, a 60-foot electric catamaran with solar panels
  • First PY60 unit, Pioneer One, set to debut at Cannes Yachting Festival 2026

Driven by precision

Based in the maritime cluster on the Baltic Sea, Pioneer Yachts strongly reflects its founder's background and mindset. The Bremen-born engineer, Mike Frank, founded the meistro Energie group 20 years ago. This is an early provider of direct CO2-free energy from proprietary photovoltaic parks, which now operates at scale within Germany's energy transition landscape.

With Frank applying the same principles to the maritime sector as he does elsewhere, Pioneer Yachts' boats offer clear system architecture, measurable performance and continuous refinement through use. As the son of a commercial shipping captain, for Frank, the sea is not a lifestyle backdrop, but a working environment defined by responsibility, navigation and technical discipline, and this shines through in the boats built by Pioneer Yachts.

Putting it into practice: Meet the PY60

This distinctive philosophy is brought to life in Pioneer Yachts' first model: a catamaran that translates experience, discipline and system thinking into a practical, seaworthy platform.

Marrying reliable German engineering with Italian design, the exterior design and naval architecture of the PY60 are by Cossutti & Ganz, with interiors by Micheletti + Partners.

This 60-foot catamaran will be equipped with solar panels and electric engines. It is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 11 knots, cruising at 7.5 knots. Thanks to its 100% solar-electric propulsion, the PY60 is designed for continuous, reliable long-range cruising, offering full on-water independence, thanks to its impressive range.

Set to launch this summer, the first PY60 (Pioneer One) will make its world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026 from September 8-13.

Founder and CEO Mike Frank explains more: "As I am operating the first unit myself, this will serve as our key reference point. We will monitor the operations under real conditions, and this essential data can inform further development. In short, future units will be built for real use. This is our top priority as a company."

A distinct injustice?
When is a RIB not RIB, nor dayboat, nor adventure craft? When it is an ADV from Highfield... You know, you would have to think so… Yes, they are dayboats. They're also adventure craft, which is why Highfield calls them the ADV7 and ADV9. Problem is, Highfield themselves call them RIBs, and as best as I can tell, they're actually not. Posted on 9 Jun
