32nd Lake Garda Optimist Open at 2nd World Youth Sailing Week - Day 1

It was a spectacular day for the start of the 32nd Lake Garda meeting Optimist Class, the highlight event of the World Youth Sailing Week which includes also events for the windsurfer Techno 293 and the Laser.

It is an amazing sight watching the hundreds of youngsters taking part in the 2nd World Youth Sailing week being held on the upper reaches of Lake Garda. An event which has attracted sailors from forty nations and is organised by Vela Garda Trentino, the participating sailing clubs are helping to put on an event unique not only in Italy but also throughout the world. These clubs are, the Fraglia Vela Riva, Circolo Vela Arco and the Circolo Surf Torbole together with the Fraglia Vela Malcesine and the Italian Sailing Federation. The racing on Saturday and Sunday' will be streamed live on the internet thanks to sponsorship from' Kinder and Sport'.

Clear skies today and the wind arriving punctually from the south at midday and blowing at an average of 15 knots for the main part of the afternoon guaranteed excellent racing from a technical viewpoint and a breath-taking view for those who followed the event from the shore.

2nd World Youth Sailing Week/ 32nd Meeting del Garda Optimist Day 1

Juniors: 625 participants divided into 5 flights

With the classification as it stands after two races (the third race is still taking place) the situation is still very evenly divided in the fleet which has been divide into five different flights. First position is shared between the Danish sailor Orting, the Russian Volchkov, the Turk Rasim and the Italian Luca Valentino who is the leading sailor amongst the Italian contingent. All of these sailors have a first and a second in their respective flights. The first girl in the classification is the outright winner of last year's regatta the Italian Alexandra Stalder who stands in thirtieth overall.

Cadets: 209 participants divided into two flights

Two really good races in this division consisting of two flights and good news for the Italians who occupy first and third place in the provisional classification with Franceso Novelli and Gaja Pela' making good starts. Joint first place for the Russian Dmitry Golovkin in the second flight and 2nd place for the German Mic Mohr in the 1st flight who is actually fourth overall.

Techno 293 Garda Lake Meeting

Day 1 dominated by the Russians

Also for the windsurfers competing in the youth windsurfing regatta being held by the Circolo Surf Torbole it has been a challenging day. Certainly a day to remember with excellent wind conditions of between 15 – 17 knots which allowed them to complete three races on this the first day for the age divisions of 'under 13', 'under 15' and 'under 17'. There are 71 racers from 11 countries competing for honours, Immediately in the under 17 class the champion Russian Nikita Prozorov came to the fore with a fifth, a first and a second place. He leads in the classification from the Honk Kong sailor Thomas Cheng Ho Yin (6; 3; 3) in third place is the Russian Mikhail Martynov (7; 5; 4), and the first girl is Miriam Sekposyan (3; 10; 8) who is in sixth place overall.

In the under 15 category first place is held by the Norwegian Matteo Maao Fregosi (5;8;1) followed on equal points by the Russian Dmitry Sansakov (6;6;2) first girl and third overall is the Turk, Ayse Beliz (8;7;5). Also out racing today were the under 13's, at their head is Edoardo Tanas with three first places followed by Gabriele Guella and Tommaso Polettini.

Laser Youth Easter meeting – Day 2

At the Fraglia Vela Malcesine after three races Gianmarco Planchestainer remains undisturbed at the head of the Radial Laser fleet despite being over the line on the third race, a result later discarded. At his back there is Roberto Pollara (today a 2nd and a 1st) and Pietro De Luca (today 6th and 2nd) the first girl is still the German sailor Sarah Roech. In the laser 4.7's at the head is Emil Toblini winner of all the races today. In second place is the Norwegian Hassum (today 2nd and 2nd) and in third place another Italian sailor,Matteo Saglia (7th and 3rd).
