An exciting last day of the 29er Europeans
The Kieler Woche has already seen race cancellations due to strong or light winds this year, but no cancellation due to a thunderstorm. This was the case on Saturday. Most of the classes had finished one race, when the black clouds were moving in above Schilksee. Head of organisation Peter Ramcke called the fleets back into the harbour, so the sailors were back ashore, bevor the first lightnings flashed and the heavy rain came. But the Lasers, Europes, 420s as well as the Flying Dutchmen and the 505s then had to wait, because a second race was scheduled for the evening, since they had not done a huge program up to then. But at 6pm - after five hours of waiting - it was finally called off. All races were postponed until Sunday 10am.
The 29ers with their European Championship during Kieler Woche were among the winners of the day. On the race course close to the shore with the TV cameras, the wind lasted for two short races. On Friday the preliminary round was closed off and the crews only took the placement from there as a point score into the finals. Crews from six nations are in the top ten. The next races are scheduled for Sunday 10am. Starts are possible until 5pm, so there is a chance to get six races in.
The new start did fit especially well into the concept of the Germans Jasper Steffens/Tom-Lennart Brauckmann (Kiel/Germany), who are hoping to earn a medal. They had started weak into the qualifications series, but could work their way up to rank 13 in the first half and still had a chance to beat the ones in the top ranking. With two good placements (5, 7) they did even move up to rank five and are now the best German crew, whereas the Spaniards Nil Mas/Oriol Mahiques took the lead. "We did not start as we wanted. After the first day we decided to better not have a look at the list to not get depressed. Even better that we could manage to come back that well", said Jasper Steffens. "Our goal for a top placement still exists. The distance to the medal ranks is only a few points", Tom-Lennart Brauckmann is happy about the mode.
For the Lasers and Europes the first attempt of the day was miserable. They had just sailed a part of the course, when the wind died completely and the race had to be cancelled. For Laser Radial sailor Constanze Stolz this was not a problem. The sailor, who is living in Kiel, uses the second part of the sailing event mainly as a training: "The Olympic part was much more important for us girls. Now we are getting prepared for the Junior European Championship at Lake Garda in two weeks." Especially in the starting procedure you can train your strength in the competition, because according to Stolz the guys are much more aggressive. After two races Stolz is on rank 13, her A-class colleague Lena Haverland is leading the fleet.
In the huge 505 fleet, the local crews still have to do some catching up. The five time World Champion and record Kiel Week winner Wolfgang Hunger is only on rank nine with his crew Julien Kleiner. The Danish World Champion from 2012, Jan Saugmann, was defending his lead. "There is a high quality in the fleet with a lot of crews, that have sailed in Olympic campaigns before and won the Worlds or Europeans", said Rolf Meyer (Duemmer/Germany), who is sailing with his daughter Leonie, who in "real" sports life is fighting for a ticket for the Olympics in the 49erFX with Elena Stoffers.
