This years National 18 Championships have been hosted in their inimitable style by the Royal Cork Yacht Club from 27th to 31st July. Thirty boats in all from England, Ireland and Scotland assembled in Crosshaven for the week.

Besides the Proctor (Ultimates) and Classic wooden boats there were eleven of the brand new Morrison designed 18s (Ultras) built by White Formula in Brightlingsea. These boats are proving to be fast especially downwind and provided some thrilling racing in the strong winds that prevailed.

The event comprised of ten races and because of no racing on the gale bound Monday there were three back-to-back races on Tuesday and Wednesday. The PRO Peter Crowley set windward/leeward courses outside the harbour and kept the racing moving at a snappy pace for the three fleets.

The eventual winner of the Ultra fleet was Colin Chapman and crew from the RCYC in Aquadisiac, while the victor of the Ultimates was Ewen Barry from Monkstown Sailing Club in D'good D'bad D'ugly, and Colman Garvey in Nimrod also of RCYC won the Classics.

Hospitality was huge and the event closed with a rendering of Paddy McGinty's Goat in the not so wee hours of Saturday morning.
