The second event of the UK J24 2018 calendar was held in Fowey over the weekend of 12th & 13th May, hosted by Fowey Gallants Sailing Club and sponsored by Sail Shape. This event was nominated by the UKCA as a World Championship Qualifier for the 2019 World Championships.

This fabulous sailing area was presented at its best all weekend with beautiful blue skies making the scenery look wonderful.

Although Steve Wassell may not agree as he had to turn on his phone to find his way from Plymouth in the fog on Friday. (But on the positive side - was rewarded with two race wins on Sunday and a perfect spinnaker sail home)

Saturday with light to moderate SE winds and a left-over slop from a breezy Friday made the bay a little choppy. The boats that did best were the ones that could keep the boat moving through the waves. Notability class measurer Nick MacDonald in Mojosi and class chairman David Cooper in Jawbreaker. By the end of five exciting races Mojosi was laying 1st, closely followed one point behind by Jawbreaker, James Torr on Majic and Dave Hale on Cacoon were joint 3rd.

Saturday night was a great social get together and our thanks to Alan Harris for organising the restaurant, entertainment, town tour, more entertainment, the rose wine, and nobbling of the competition.

Sunday was another glorious day; the wind had swung round to the NW making the conditions for the mornings racing light and fluky, ideal for the numerous hangovers.

In the final minute of the mornings first race start, the wind flicked into the West giving Alan Harris In Legal Alien a brilliant pin end port flyer however, even despite leading for most of the race they were sadly OCS.

The NW wind was replaced, after a moment of calm, by the SW sea breeze half way through the last race which turned the course upside down allowing the spinnakers to be flown to mark 1.

Sailing consistently well in these light and shifty conditions was Steve Wassell in Dogs Jorrocks notched up 2 fine wins.

Mojosi and Jawbresaker ended up on equal points overall so first place was decided on count back and awarded to Mojosi who took the Fowey Trophy and sponsors red jacket - courtesy of local sailmakers, Sail Shape. Jawbreaker were second 2nd and 3rd place went to Dave hale and team Cacoon.

Many thanks to the Fowey Gallants Sailing Club who hosted the fantastic event and Sail Shape for their sponsorship and entertainment.

Next event is the J24 Nationals at Parkstone 26th, 27th & 28th May including the J24 Class AGM on Saturday 27th after racing.
