At 19:00 AEDT, 30 hours into the 2018 edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Jim Cooney and Samantha Grant's Comanche, travelling at a little over 15 knots, was leading the fleet some 195-nm from the finish line in Hobart.

Comanche's advantage is a slender one with eight-time line honours winner Wild Oats XI, Black Jack and InfoTrack all within five-nautical miles. While the chances of witnessing a new race record have evaporated, the possibility of an epic four-way contest down the Derwent River to the finish in Hobart, most likely on Friday morning, is an enticing possibility.

There have been four retirements; 81 yachts are still in contention with the majority of the fleet negotiating the passage across the Bass Strait. The contest to finish first in Hobart is set to be one of the most memorable in recent memory; the competition to become the overall winner on corrected time currently wide open.

Live tracking from the 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, can be viewed at rolexsydneyhobart.com/tracker.
