Sailing students with from Hobart schools, Friends and Hutchins, lead the Australian Secondary Schools Team Racing Championships after two days of competition on the River Derwent.
Friends Blue yesterday notched up their 10th win in the qualifying races between school teams of three Pacer dinghies, each sailed by crew of two. Hutchins Gold moved to second overall with their eighth win.
Race officer Nick Hutton has now run 130 races in two days between the 24 schools from throughout Australia, but had to send the fleet ashore mid-afternoon when the northerly breeze died away. Competition will continue through to finals on Monday.
The top ten schools after two days of qualifying rounds are:
Friends Blue (Tas) 10 wins, Hutchins Gold (Tas) 8, Scots 1 (NSW) 7, Mater Maria College (NSW) 7, Cranbrook (NSW) 6, Friends Red (Tas) 6, Iona College (Qld) 6, Christchurch Grammar (WA) 6, Mentone Grammar (Vic) 6, Westminster (SA) 6 wins.
Friends School team skipper Ethan Galbraith said that after two days of racing competition was very close between the top five or six teams, including local rivals Hutchins and interstate teams Iona (Qld), Scots (NSW) and Cranbrook (NSW).
"We had good breeze in the morning but it died away mid-afternoon and the race officer sent us home early," Galbraith added.
