Early morning rain cleared leaving a South Westerly breeze and bright sunshine for day 5. With a building ebb, and increasing wind strengths, the boats were all able to have challenging courses with good beats, reaches and runs.
All fleets enjoyed at least one foul tide windward leg up to Roach. Class One and Two was led by Intense, sailed by Lizzie Brown. Jackal, the J92 owned by Harden, Oram and Schneidau, helmed by Flynn Davis followed, with Intense opening up a bigger on the water lead on the spinnaker leg down the Roach. However, Jackal stayed up with Intense and beat her on corrected time to take the Stanley Kiver Cup.
In Class 5 Cezanne, the 707 sailed by Tony Hall, led throughout and overhauled the tail end of Class One on the leg from Roach to Outer Crouch 4, Eclipse owned by Clive Cherry and Daryl Mylroie and the SJ27 were chasing hard, with Eclipse pulling away from the smaller Grace and Danger on the fair tide spinnaker reach. Spring Chicken were next, but a headsail tear meant retirement for them later in the race. Ant Law again sailing only 2 up was sailing hard. Cezanne won, with Eclipse second and Grace and Danger third.
Traigh (Dan Tribe) and Ophelia, Richard Moore were boat for boat match racing until well into the race, tacking up the Roach together and running boat for boat down river, goosewinging their headsails. On corrected time, Traigh won, with Ophelia second and David Hill in Spangle third.
Six Dragons raced today, with Robert Campbell leading on the foul tide beat up to Roach, all 6 staying tucked in closely under the Westerly shore of the River. Quicksilver VI took the win, with weekend winner, Peter Marchant in Beauty and the Beast coming second, with Pageboy XI third.
The Squibs again saw the lead positions chop and change with Phil Aspinall in Guy Fawkes leading on the first reach down to Pinto (P) used as a passing mark on the way to rounding Holliwell. By the second leg to Holliwell after the foul tide beat up to Roach Lady Penelope, Malcolm Hutchins was leading followed by Spoof sailed by Mickey Wright and Ray Apthorp in Nemesis. By the finish, Spoof had got the lead to take the win from Lady Penelope second and Nemesis third.
In the RBODS Red Jacket, Stephen Herring won, with Will Dallimore in Mandarin second and Roger Martin sailing Onyx third. The RCODS were led by Corinna for the first leg down, but the foul tide beats and tight spinnaker reaches saw close racing and changes to the leading group. By the finish, Justin Waples in Cormorant had got the lead from Sue Law in Coralie second, and Corinna, Martin Makey, third.
The day's racing hasn't finished yet, with the Burnham Sailing Club hosting the John Torrance Memorial Race after 6pm tonight.
