Day Six was business as usual in Burnham Week, with bright sunshine and blue skies, although the wind was patchy and fickle, with big holes upriver for the day boats to contend with. Down river, the cruisers had very gusty conditions to sail in for their race.
The Cruisers all started at Pile House, and headed off down river to Pinto, embarking on a many legged courses to really test the crews and helms. In Class One, Jackal took her second win of the series with Jeannie second and Intense third. In Class 5 Grace and Danger won, with Spring Chicken second. Grace and Danger lead overall. Class 6 saw David Hill take his first win of the week in Spangle a Contessa 32, with Traigh second. Richard Moore in Ophelia retired after running aground. Traigh is leading the series on 6 points with three second places.
The day boat classes all headed up river on a long foul tide beat for their race. The Dragons headed off to Canewdon before returning to Cliff and right up to Crossrail, where the H flag was flying just after 2pm. The squibs, RCODs and RBODs all went to Cliff and Canewdon, again where they were sent straight home, having taken nearly two hours to get there against the strong ebb tide and tricky conditions.
Anarchy, Chip Cole, was first round Canewdon in the Dragon fleet with Avalanche, Mark Wade next. At Crossrail, after a fair tide run and another foul tide beat, Quicksilver VI, Robert Campbell had got up into second. Pageboy, helmed by Paul Taylor won, with Quicksilver second and Avalanche third.
In the RCODs, the places changed regularly on the windward leg. At the start of the beat, Coram Number 5 had got into the lead past Corinna. Corinna was then in second, with Cormorant, Justin Waples in third. Further up the beat, Cormorant had got into the lead as they approached Creeksea. Cormorant won, with Corinna second and Corpo Santo, John Waples, third.
In the Squib fleet, the hole down river of Creeksea really split the fleet with some of the back markers eventually retiring. Spoof and Guy Fawkes were near the front, and crossed tacks. Throughout the early parts of the race, the wind was so shifty, the order on the water was constantly changing, with patches of winds meaning different parts of the river paid, and not always benefitting those staying out of the tide. Several boats retired before making Canewdon. Spoof won, to keep her series lead with Lady Penelope second and Guy Fawkes third.
The RBODs had a long beat up to Canewdon before heading home. Red Jacket led and won, from Lily Lower in Gannet. Will Dallimore was third in Mandarin putting him third overall on countback from Blue Jacket.
