US Harbors, a free online resource for boaters and coastal communities, announced today the inaugural National Harbormaster Appreciation Day will be celebrated on October 8th, 2019. The new holiday, registered with the National Day Archive, is intended to bring recognition to the vital public servants in coastal communities that often are under appreciated.
Unlike police and firefighters, many people do not understand the key role their harbormaster plays in keeping the center of their coastal communities - the harbor - clean, safe, and running smoothly. They are a vital interface between the harbors' ecosystems, the communities and people that use them, and the governing bodies that regulate their management.
"We wanted to provide a platform for harbormasters to speak about their harbors, the work they do, and what it takes to be a harbormaster," said Anastasia Fischer, president, US Harbors. "We hope that by spreading awareness of this position, people will take an interest in their local harbormaster and hear the stories that these often colorful individuals have to tell."
US Harbors is orchestrating local events around the country, along with running an awareness campaign about harbormasters on social media from August 30th, 2019 through Harbormaster Appreciation Day on October 8th, 2019. Harbormasters will receive a mailed letter of thanks, with a certificate of appreciation, the week of October 8th along with gifts from the 2019 Harbormaster Appreciation Day sponsors.
US Harbors is encouraging followers and press to feature their own local harbormaster on websites and social feeds. Tag these posts with the hashtag #harbormasterday2019.
