Kieler Woche 2020 - Day 3: Polish youngsters dominate in the 420

The Kieler Woche can head for the end of the first half in a very relaxed manner. After another "beautiful day on the water", as regatta organizer Dirk Ramhorst described it, a full programme is already on schedule.

"At the end we will sail in a narrower time window," said Ramhorst, who expects many sailors to leave quickly after the last race on Tuesday. Because there will be no big prize-giving ceremony due to social distancing. Only the top-placed sailors will be able to collect their trophies and be photographed with them. A half dozen German athletes are heading for the Kieler Woche victory. While the Danes had two sailors in a good position for the win, the Netherlands and Poland had one each as well.

420

The Polish 420 team has taken the start of the final rounds seriously. While they were still waiting in line in the preliminary round, two crews have now moved to the top. Zofia Korsak/Karolina Cendrowska scored one win and two second places to take the lead. Their compatriots Patryk Kosmalski/Tomasz Lewandowski took seventh place in the first race of the day, but then scored two wins. This gives them a good lead on third place. The bronze medal for best German is taken by Lilli Zellmer (Rahnsdorf), daughter of 2004 Olympic star Lucas Zellmer (Berlin), and Vincent Bahr, son of 1992 Olympic participant Peggy Bahr. They had to deal with an early start disqualification in the three races on Monday.

505

After Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess had critically observed a third place as the worst result in the 505 fleet on the first two days, they couldn't enjoy the slip in the eighth race (seventh place). But in fact, the way is actually levelled for the duo from Strande and Eckernförde towards the next Kieler Woche victory. With a 13-point lead over the toughest challengers, Kai Bertallot/Moritz Klingenberg (Kiel), and as many as 19 points over the third-placed Stefan Böhm/Gerald Roos (Ville), Hunger/Jess will be satisfied with a twelfth place in the two final races on Tuesday for overall victory.

Contender

The German Contender sailors will be able to challenge the Danes for the daily victories during the Kieler Woche. On day three, both World Champion Max Billerbeck (Kollmar) and the World Championship fourth of 2019, Markus Maisenbacher (Hannover), were able to cheer as winners once at the finish. This does not change the overall dominance of the Danes. Sören Dulon Andreasen continues to lead the Danish combined team ahead of Jesper Armbrust and Max Billerbeck. Markus Maisenbacher is eighth before the final day.

Europe

With a consistant day the Kieler Johann Tammen has sailed up to the medal places. Many top sailors had a mixed day. Starting from fourth place, he has a good chance of making it to the podium on tomorrow's final day with a draw on points and only three points behind the second. The top spot, however, is undisputed. Anna Livbjerg (Denmark) can hardly be dissuaded from the gold course. Behind her are currently Cyril Richard (France) and Simon Christoffersen (Denmark) on two and three.

Laser 4.7

Batbold Gruner is about to achieve his greatest success in the Laser 4.7 class: The man from Lower Saxony keeps the international competition in the Laser junior class at a distance. Although the start into the first race of the day was disappointing, the sailor from the Zwischenahner Meer impressed with top speed on the course and scored with a fourth, sixth and first place. But the Scandinavian competitors are still in pursuit. Erik Norlén (Sweden) and Magnus Heegard (Denmark) also scored a day victory each and will provide the German with a hard fight at the end.

Laser Radial

The 2018 World Champion Emma Plasschaert allows the youngsters to take the lead. The Belgian didn't finish two races on day three, so that the Dutchman Paul Hameeteman is now the clear leader. While the Brit Arthur Farley took second place ahead of the Dane Anna Munch, Plasschaert dropped back to fifth place - even with a second place at the end of the day.

Musto Skiff

There were no changes on the first three ranks of the fast skiffs. Iver Ahlmann (Kiel) seamlessly continued the winning series of the previous day and extended his lead over pursuers Paul Dijsktra (Netherlands) and Jan Busch (Aachen).
