The 21st anniversary of the Tamar Marine Blockbuster Weekend saw over 70 off-the-beach boats from five classes race over the two days, with three new Tasmanian champions crowned at the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club in northern Tasmania.
Conditions were perfect for the Race Officer and the sailors, with a 12 to 18 knot north to north-westerly sea-breeze settling in for the final day of racing. The weekend saw extremely close racing across all Classes.
Nicholas Jones sailing My Horizon and representing the Wynyard Yacht Club, won the 2021 Tasmanian Sabot Championship on seven points on a countback from Liam Jones (Crude Oil) from the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club, and Zephyr Coull (Running on Empty) in third place on 16 points. Arthur Adam (Blue Juice) won the Sabot Development Title on nine points also on a countback from Harry Frith (Fair Dinkum).
The 2021 B14 State Championship was won in convincing style by Robbie Hunt and Charlotte Armstrong from the Kingston Beach Sailing Club sailing The Hitcher. The pair finished on 7 points, with Adrian and Kelly Beswick (Rocketship) runners-up on 15 points and Stephen Miller and Sarah Haywood (Phantom) in third on 21 points.
Tasmanian Institute of Sport sailors Sam King (Redemption) from the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and Will Sargent (T15) had an incredibly close battle in the Laser Full Class, with King winning four races and Sargent winning three. The competition went down to the wire with King winning the final race of the day to win the Tasmanian Championship by one point (eight points) from Sargent. "It definitely wasn't a day for a defeatist attitude - diamonds are made under pressure and we definitely had pressure today," said King.
Joshua Ragg (No Limit) from the RYCT won the Laser Radial event on 6 points with six winds from seven races, while Tom Hugo (Atomic) took out the Laser 4.7 event on 6 points.
In the Sabre Class, Stewart Gray (Steamboat Willie) from the Lindisfarne Sailing Club, mounted a mighty comeback to come from fourth position to win the event with 16 points from Jason Followes (FOMO) on 18 points and Richard Parker (Essence) on 19 points. "I had some bad starts on Saturday, so my plan was to win the final day, stay out of trouble, and get four clean starts," said Gray.
The NS14 division was won by Scott Wilkie and Lucas Foerder (Serenity) on 6 points from Sam Bailey and Linda Bailey (Sundaze) on 11 points and Brianna McElwee and Holly James (Indecisive) on 19 points.
The event was a tremendous success and testament to the camaraderie across these off-the-beach classes statewide.
