Musto Lark National Championship at Rock - Day 1

by Stuart Hydon 30 May 2021 10:40 PDT 30 May - 2 June 2021

The Larks were 'up with the Lark' on the first day of their championships for an 0830 start, due to an early spring tide. The event is being sponsored by Musto and ably managed by PRO Martin Hough.

The sun finally shone on Cornwall, with competitors enjoying the first warm weather of the year, but a light and fluky Easterly making it tricky for race officer and competitors alike in the Camel Estuary, just south of the famous Doom Bar.

The first race got away only after a general recall and a black flag being raised. Harry and Gemma Pynn rounded first, followed by Stuart and Nick Hydon. Chris and Nic White overtook the Hydons down the second leg, followed by James Goss and Rachel Rhodes. The Hydons regained second position and put chase to the Pynns. The Pynns held their lead to the finish, followed by the Hydons with Goss /Rhodes taking third.

The second race started with the tide now ebbing. It got off cleanly, with the fleet splitting up the first beat. James Stewart and Jeremy Stephens rounded first just in front of the Whites. After a battle, the Whites stole the lead, leaving the fight for third between Goss/Rhodes and Ed Bradburn/Sarah Norbury. The Whites managed to hold on to first, despite extremely tricky conditions in terms of wind and increasing tide.

Thanks to the race team for keeping us on time despite the narrow tide window and to Musto the sponsor of the event.

Results after Day 1:

1st Chris and Nic White - 5pts
2nd James Goss and Rachel Rhodes - 6pts
3rd Harry and Jemma Pynn - 8pts
4th James Stewart and Jeremy Stephens - 8pts
5th Stuart and Nick Hydon - 8pts
