2022 Footy National Championship at Frensham Pond

by Roger Stollery 13 Apr 2022 00:06 PDT 10 April 2022

Nine competitors took part in the second Footy open race of the year and first National Championship for 2 years. 17 races were sailed in very light and incredibly variable winds, which were very challenging with the wind blowing from behind the competitors.

After a slow, flat calm start the wind allowed RO Roger Stollery to set a windward leeward course, which everyone enjoyed after they had got used to the great wind direction variability. At the front of the fleet two competitors stood out by winning all the races between them, with Peter Shepherd sailing his balsa Fat Boy Slim winning 9, whilst John Burgione sailing a carbon ICE won 8. 12 year old Junior Championship winner Oliver Stollery also sailing an ICE led the chasing pack to finish 3rd.

The racing was incredibly close at times and just prior finishing a predictable win was never certain until the leading boat actually crossed the line. All the competitors enjoyed a cooked lunch in the clubhouse and also the specially prepared famous 'Frensham' tea after the racing. At prize-giving, the winners thanked the four man race team for creating a really good event.

Overall Results:
