by Zurn Yacht Design 6 May 09:20 PDT

Zurn Yacht Design has announced a new, much-anticipated, fully custom project —Design No. 18158.

  • The yacht has class-leading strength, durability, and performance all in a light-weight package
  • The project is in the final stages of construction at Delta Marine
  • The Delta Marine 70 is expected to cruise in the mid-30-knot range
  • The owner is a repeat client of Zurn Yacht Design
  • The yacht will be delivered to the U.S. east coast
  • MCM is acting as the owner's representative

The project is in the final stages of construction at Washington state's Delta Marine and is slated for a summer 2022 launch followed by an east coast delivery. MCM is acting as the owner's representative.

The idea for the yacht came from an owner of another Zurn design, the MJM 50z, who wanted a larger yacht in the 70-foot range that used a similar design philosophy. However, MJM is known for producing smaller yachts than the owner desired. After a long search, it was decided that Delta Marine would be the one for the job, as the client demanded Superyacht quality for this new yacht, and Delta had the ability to deliver just that.

Sophisticated construction

The combination of ZYD's understanding of high-tech design with Delta Marine's Superyacht expertise was the essence of this yacht's conception and build process. The 70 has high-tech epoxy infused laminates in both the hull and deck that utilize E-glass and carbon reinforcements. The result is a yacht with class-leading strength, durability, and performance all in a light-weight package.

"No compromises were to be made in this project. A narrow chine beam and moderate deadrise produce an efficient hull that planes easily with the least amount of resistance when speeds are higher and lower fuel burn is key. Furthermore, a generous water line length-to-beam ratio will generate an incredibly soft and dry ride unmatched by any other yacht in its class," explained Doug Zurn, Head of Zurn Yacht Design.

Multifunctional layout

The yacht's cockpit is designed both for cruising and for fishing. Teak tables and chairs can be removed to make room for a Release Marine fighting chair or battle saddle, both custom made in conjunction with GMT Composites out of carbon fiber to stay in line with the dictum to keep the yacht's weight down. A stowage compartment will also be able to double as a baitwell.

The yacht's comfortable interior was done by Tack Studios and has an artfully crafted teak table surrounded by seating that is kept cool either by air conditioning or specifically placed windows that usher in fresh air. Meanwhile at the helm, the captain enjoys a bevy of high-tech features including, but not limited to, a Garmin/Volvo Glass Cockpit display, Garmin Surround View, and a Flir night-vision camera.

"The owner was very insistent that he could manage this yacht by himself and see all of its goings on from the convenience of the helm. The yacht is powered by twin Volvo IPS 1350's, incorporating their joystick control, proprietary station keeping, and assisted docking," said Zurn.

Down below the 70 has an Amidships Master Cabin with a queen-size berth, en suite head and ample stowage. A large, forepeak VIP Cabin also has an en suite head, overhead hatches and hull and deck ports for fresh ventilation. A third cabin—the Captain's Quarters—rounds out the sleeping accommodations.

When it's time to go ashore the 70 has an 11-foot ABI inflatable with a 30-horsepower outboard engine that can make easy entry and egress via a hydraulic swim platform.

High-level performance

The yacht is expected to cruise in the mid-30-knot range, while planing easily thanks to a narrow chine beam and moderate deadrise. The Zurn Yacht Design team also focused on efficient performance at both high and low speeds, as well as a soft ride.

When this model launches in a few months it is sure to makes waves in the market thanks to its innovative features, exquisite attention to detail, fast and comfortable performance, and a design pedigree that is among the very best in the world.
