Volvo 29er European Championship at the Royal Danish Yacht Club - Day 5

by 29er Class & Royal Danish Yacht Club 5 Jul 2022 00:04 PDT 27 June - 5 July 2022

A westerly, offshore breeze around 10-15 knots met the sailors on the morning of day 5 on Rungsted Harbour at the Volvo 29er European Championship. The struggle of finding the best path through the wind shifts plus challenges with seaweed made for another day of ups-and-downs result wise for the sailors.

The team who had the lowest score of the day in the Gold fleet were the French team Tom Goron and Mael Clochard onboard FRA 2901. "I like these winds. I see the clouds and then we were good at playing the shifts," said the young French helm of the team. The other challenging factor under water they dealt with wisely too: "We also had weed under our boat and we prioritized to get it of during the race", Tom said. The team is currently on 2nd position in Gold fleet and are the best ranked U-17 team at the Europeans so far.

At the ceremony two sailors representing the Danish SailGP team powered by ROCKWOOL will hand out the Mini Impact League prize to the 29er-team, who has had the most sustainability impact.

17 sibling-teams in the fleet

At this year's European Championship there are 17 teams with siblings sailing together. An interesting dynamic that for sure gives advantages, but also sometimes a discussion around the dinner table at home. "It is good, you can be way more direct when it is your sibling, which is good because you can share way more information", says Nathan Van Steenberge who crews for his sister Clementine Van Steenberge on board IRL 3169. She adds: "We tend to quarrel a bit on land but when we are on the water we work pretty well together. It has brought us closer I think". The Danish Bradley-brother-duo with Gustav Åsholm-Bradley and Clement Åsholm-Bradley (DEN 21) admit, that it has its pros and cons sailing together as brothers in a team: "It is easy to communicate because you know each other well, but sometimes it can also be a problem because you know each other too well."
