Squib National Championship at Weymouth Sailing Club - Day 5

by Vincent Delany 29 Jun 2023 11:54 PDT 25-30 June 2023

If a championship lasts for a week, it often tests the competitors in a wide variety of conditions. Today, in race seven, the 65 boat Squib Fleet raced in wind off the shore of 5 to 12 knots which shifted back and forth through sixty degrees.

On the start line in Weymouth Bay there was a slight bias towards the committee boat, and that was where most competitors positioned themselves. The fleet got away on the first start. Phil Aspinall and Dave Sheppard in No. 72 'Guy Fawkes' sailed consistently high on the left hand side of the course nearest Portland Harbour, and picked up a thirty degree lift on their approach to the windward mark, which he rounded in the lead.

He held that lead to the leeward mark, and the second windward mark, but as they approached the leeward gate for the second time, Tom Jeffcoate and Mark Hogan in multi-championship winner No. 136 'Ric-O-Shea' found a private gust of wind, overtook 'Guy Fawkes' and led on the second boat. Tom and Mark managed to sail fast and avoid the 'snakes' of headers and light pressure to win the race from local team of Mike and Penny Fenwick in 'Ghost Rider' and the deserving 'Guy Fawkes' taking third place.

This race result has opened up the leaderboard, with championship leaders Jono & Chris in No.142 'Two Counts' finishing in 34th position which will be a second discard for them.

'Ric-O-Shea' is now only 6 points astern in the overall leaderboard. With only one race outstanding, tomorrow, there will be a clash of the giants between 'Two Counts' using Lonton and Gray sails, a tight rig, and a distinctive black hull and his rival 'Ric-O-Shea' using Batt Sails, a low tension rig, and an inconspicuous beige hull.
