Hill Head Sailing Club welcomed 32 young sailors for the 2023 Cadet Dinghy Week, with the aspirational backdrop of Cowes Week.

Unfortunately, Monday's sailing had to be cancelled due to strong winds as did Cowes week, but the organizers managed to keep the spirits high by arranging a diverse range of on and in-water games.

Luckily, the weather improved on Tuesday, allowing them to proceed with racing, and they successfully completed three races. However, Wednesday had to be put on hold due to storm Patricia's presence, putting all activities on pause.

Despite the challenges, the Race Committee worked diligently on Thursday and squeezed in an impressive total of six races to make up for lost time. The determination continued on Friday, with another five races being successfully completed, wrapping up the event on a high note.

For numerous sailors, this event marked their first-ever participation, with several of them having recently picked up sailing skills just this summer. However, by the end of the week, every sailor demonstrated remarkable sailing prowess and a tremendous boost in their water confidence. Witnessing their significant progress was truly inspiring.

The event comprised two fleets, namely the Toppers and RS Tera, while the novice sailors received specialised coaching in a separate Optimist fleet, guiding them around the course. This coaching allowed them to enhance their abilities and grow as sailors.

Looking forward, the 2024 dinghy week is already set for the week beginning Monday, 5th August, and we encourage everyone to save the date in their diaries. The event promises to be a fun-filled occasion, and all are warmly welcomed to be a part of the excitement.

Special thanks to all the parents and volunteers for making the event happen and Rooster sailing for providing the prizes to the event. Thank you for your support.
