Thousand Islands Race, one of the longest and most demanding Adriatic regattas will start its tenth edition at 12:00 on Monday, September 18th from Port of Rijeka. The race among more than 1000 Adriatic islands is sailed on what the organizers from Sailing Club of Rijeka and Porto Montenegro Yacht Club like to call as the best offshore course that nature may design.
First leg is starting from Rijeka, leaving on starboard islands Unije, Susak, Premuda, Dugi Otok, Kornat, Vis, Lastovo and Sv. Andrija on starboard to finish in front of Porto Montenegro marina in Tivat, Montenegro. Over distance of about 280 miles, challenge of navigating among the many islands and channels of the Croatian coast and fascinating Boka Kotor bay await competitors. In return they are awarded by pleasure of sport and stunning region's natural beauty known around the world for its character.
After the prize-giving for Leg 1 the fleet races back to Rijeka on the same course, starting on Thursday, September 22nd followed by the prize-giving scheduled at the end of second lap in Rijeka.
This edition gathered sailboats from Austria, Croatia and Slovenia. Special welcome to some new names in this competition with expectation that with opening of new ACI-Gitone Marina in Porto Baros of Rijeka conditions for hosting greater number of sailboats Thousand Islands Race would reach status of biggest offshore races in Mediterranean.
Speed record for both legs recognised since 2015 by World Speed Sailing Council is kept by Hungarian Wild Joe at 27h 24m 5s for the first leg with average speed of 10.14 kts and 32h 45s for the second leg with average speed at 8.86 kts. This is the challenge for Thousand Islands Race participants and opportunity to be listed on world sailing speed records.
Racing can be followed live on-line through the tracking system giving position of boats together with real time calculation of corrected times. First leg time limit is on Wednesday September 21st at 12:00. Weather permitting, first boats are expected to finish in Tivat after one or two days of racing.
Organisers are grateful to their traditional devoted patrons Primorje-Gorski kotar County, City of Rijeka Kvarner Tourrist Association, Rijeka Tourist Association, Rijeka Port Authority and Harbour Master and special thanks to ACI-Gitone marina in Rijeka for its support.
