iQFoil International Games start in Torbole

by Elena Giolai 11 Oct 2023 13:07 PDT 10-15 October 2023

First day characterised by a nice northerly wind; four course races the balance of the day.

The iQFoil International Games, organised as the last regatta of the 2023 season, by Circolo Surf Torbole, in collaboration with the international Olympic class iQFoil and Federazione Italiana Vela, began in Torbole, on Garda Trentino, with a beautiful sunny day and a northerly wind of 10-14 knots.

Considering the weather conditions of these days, the Race Committee decided to bring forward the start of the first day of competition to 9 a.m., because the forecasts guaranteed wind of a certain intensity only with the morning pelér. This decision was certainly a good one, as four course races were completed for both males and females, and the first discard was already awarded. Among the males, Turkey's Onur Cavit Biriz took the lead, followed by France's Bourgeois and Pouliquen, tied on 7 points. Also competing was the local and Circolo Surf Torbole holder Jacopo Renna, who finished second in the fourth and final race of the day: he is currently eighth. Among the women in the lead was Germany's Alisa Engelmann, who scored three wins and a second; behind her, with a three-point gap, was Czech Svikova; third was Turkey's Uralp Palombo. Also on Thursday, as presumably all week, racing will take place in the morning with the start at 9:00 am.
