2024 Rolex Swan Cup: forty years of partnership

The Rolex Swan Cup is one of sailing's most revered regattas. The 1984 edition marked the beginning of Rolex's remarkable relationship with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS).

It was also notable for the coming together of the Swiss watchmaker and the Finnish shipyard, Nautor Swan, two brands synonymous with excellence, innovation and elegance. And so a threeway partnership was effectively born, the protagonists bound by an indefatigable passion for yachting and the sea. In 2024, the Rolex Swan Cup celebrates 40 years of this exceptional union, drawing over 100 yachts for a display of racing prowess and camaraderie from 15 to 21 September.

Rolex Testimonee Paul Cayard, the renowned United States yachtsman and competitor, underlines the strength of the bonds so critical to the event's continued success: "The Rolex Swan Cup is one of the most significant regattas in yachting. It has the distinction of uniting three outstanding partners, all of whom are driven by a desire to encourage progress and innovation, while respecting heritage and tradition."

In total, more than 2,350 Swan yachts, measuring between 8.5 and 40 metres (28-131 feet), have been built since the marque's launch in 1966, coincidentally, a year before the founding of the YCCS. Many of the models are considered era-defining and all carry the same hallmarks: high performance, timelessness, technical proficiency and durability.

The current generation of sailing yachts is divided into three clear categories: Maxis such as the Swan 108 and 128; performance cruisers such as the Swan 48 MKII and 65; and the ClubSwan line of racing yachts, including the outstanding ClubSwan 80, the exceptional ClubSwan 50, the innovative ClubSwan 36 and the latest two to join the fold, the ClubSwan 43 and ClubSwan 28. These race-oriented designs have proven incredibly popular in recent years, garnering respect from the world's most celebrated sailors.

They include Rolex Testimonee Robert Scheidt. The Brazilian yachtsman, a five-time Olympic medallist, has previously raced as a tactician on a ClubSwan 50. He says: "The Rolex Swan Cup is an exceptional event that sailors of all backgrounds aspire to be a part of. The new one-design classes create incredibly close racing and add lustre to an already impressive fleet, sailing in one of the most remarkable environments."

Having hosted the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup the previous week, the YCCS and Sardinia's Costa Smeralda will again provide an exceptional setting for the Rolex Swan Cup. Deep blue waters, captivating scenery and reliable winds make the Maddalena Archipelago an enviable competition arena. Five days of racing will be contested over a mix of challenging coastal courses and shorter, quick-fire windward/leeward racetracks.

Andrea Recordati, Commodore of the YCCS, describes the approach of the host club: "Throughout the past five decades, sailors have come to expect a first-class racing programme that offers intense, even and exciting competition. Our role is to ensure these high standards are maintained."

Despite the presence of many leading sailors, it is the yachts that are the stars. Immaculately maintained and presented, they elicit a shared pride among owners and their crews. This solidarity of spirit is demonstrated on the water, too, with a prevailing sense of fair play throughout the regatta. Equally, the onshore social programme is geared to providing the Swan community a chance to convene and share their collective enthusiasm. The event attracts crews of all ages, with many boats including women in key roles. This inclusive approach has a positive effect on the atmosphere of a special event.

Nautor Group CEO Giovanni Pomati reflects on the enduring appeal: "The Rolex Swan Cup is an iconic and historic event which unites first-class yachts, passionate owners and sailors, and three long-standing partners, YCCS, Rolex and Nautor Swan. The regatta is about more than competition, it is about a sense of belonging, of pride and of showcasing that heritage can sit comfortably alongside evolution, innovation, quality, elegance and reliability."

The first Rolex Swan Cup in 1984 marked the beginning of an extraordinary chapter in Rolex's near-70 year relationship with yachting. It opened a remarkable gateway to other like-minded bodies, equally impassioned with respect for the sport, its traditions and the sea. That the three-way partnership continues to flourish today is confirmation of the depth of trust and mutual understanding that developed from the very outset.
