The Coast Guard Foundation recognized a Coast Guard Station Sabine (Port Arthur, Texas) response boat crew at the Texas Salutes the Coast Guard dinner on November 21 in Houston, Texas. We hope you find this story inspiring and that you share it with your audience.
On March 31, 2023, Coast Guard Station Sabine, led by Petty Officer 2nd Class Chad Rollins, performed a daring rescue of two individuals trapped in a partly sunken tugboat. The Sea Cypress, a tugboat out on the Sabine River, was starting to sink. Using a blowtorch, Petty Officer Rollins and the crew of the station's response boat cut through the hull, bending it open just enough to pull them to safety—a true testament to courage and quick thinking.
Not only was Petty Officer Rollins recognized by the Foundation, but Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard Admiral Kevin Lunday and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Heath Jones capped off the evening by meritoriously promoting him to Petty Officer 1st Class for his bravery in front of everyone after hearing about his profound act of heroism - a well-deserved recognition.
