Pablo Astiazaran completed a breakout 2024 season by claiming his first-ever EuroCup with a 3rd place in the final event in Barcelona. We recently spoke to Pablo on "The Swarm" Podcast.
The final event in Barcelona proved spectacular, with a range of conditions and plenty of wind. The event begun with a classic Slalom event where the 40 boats were pitched against each other in windy conditions.
Championship racing followed across the remaining days with a great battle between the winner Alberto Hernandez from Spain, Hippolyte Gruet from France and Pablo Astiazaran from Spain.
In the women's side of the fleet, Lena Fries from Switzerland claimed the overall EuroCup with some fantastic consistent performances and took out the 6.9m division as well. Close behind was Julia Gebhard from Germany and Lousie Metenier from France. While Sol Lopez Navarro claimed victory in the Barcelona leg.
The re-structure of the EuroCup proved a winner, with 200 WASZP sailors competing across the season. The points scoring changed to a best of 3-event model. This allowed the EuroCup to essentially be split into conferences where 3 events where held in close proximity to each region in Europe with a cross-conference event at Foiling Week in Italy which attracted over 100 boats. Stay tuned for next seasons calendar! We have something big planned for 2025!
