A great day boating is a safe day

Boating is a quintessential way to enjoy this nation's vast array of waterways over the Australia Day long weekend according to the Boating Industry Association (BIA).

BIA CEO Andrew Fielding said an estimated five million people go boating each year in Australia and this long weekend is traditionally a popular time to get out on the water.

"Australia is an island continent with more than 35,000 km of coastline and has some of the best waterways, and climate, for boating in the world," Fielding said.

"Boating is for everyone, no matter age, gender or cultural background and there is a boat to suit all interests and budgets, from small paddle and sail craft, to powerboats and sailboats of all sizes. And of course there is the inexpensive fishing "tinnie" or aluminium runabout that is by far the most common boat type of all in our nation.

"Getting out on a boat is a wonderful and healthy way to experience and enjoy the outdoors with family and friends.

"A great day on the water is, however, a safe day. So we ask the millions who will be on the water over this weekend, whether it be in their own boats, hire boats, charter boats or even on water taxis and ferries to have a great time but to be responsible and safe out on the water."

Across Australia it is estimated there are almost 1 million registered boats with 1 in 10 people holding a qualification to drive a powerboat.

The Boating Industry Association Ltd is the peak industry body in Australia that represents the interests of boating which includes designers, manufacturers, importers, brokers, insurers, retailers, charters, yacht and boat clubs, marinas, events, surveyors and trades from boat builders to riggers, and more.

The BIA reported industry national turnover last year of $10.12 billion and directly employs more than 35,000 people. Seventy-five per cent are in small family businesses, employing local workers and supporting local communities.
