Tumlaren State Titles Preview - 88 years of competitive one-design racing on Port Phillip waters

by Peter Costolloe 10 Mar 15:44 PDT 29-30 March 2025

Now in their 88th year of one design racing, the world's largest fleet of the Knud Riemers designed Tumlaren are still at their hard racing best.

In 1937, the Tumlare design was selected by the Royal St. Kilda Yacht Club (now RMYS) to bring about one design yacht racing on Port Phillip. Originally intended to last five years, the close racing presented to the skippers and crews by these Tumlaren's has seen this One -Design Class hold tight and continue to give keen competitive racing over the last 88 years.

With the advice by the original builder to add twin full length bilge stringers, the Tumlaren design has taken on and won against all types of weather that Port Phillip can throw up. Light wind, fog and 80 knot storms, all are victims of the Tumlaren metacentric design.

The Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron is pulling out all stops for a grand trophy presentation that awaits our 2025 State Titles victors as they reprise the many yesteryears of hard one design racing as they compete for the T L Banks glass cabinet encased trophy.
