Easter Long Weekend: A time to embrace Australia's love of boating

As Australians prepare to enjoy the Easter long weekend, the Boating Industry Association (BIA) anticipates a surge in recreational boating activity across the nation's waterways.

"Easter is a cherished time for many Australians," says Andrew Fielding, CEO of the BIA. "It's a chance to relax, reconnect with loved ones, and enjoy the incredible natural beauty our country has to offer. For many, that means heading to the coast, rivers, and lakes to experience the joy of boating."

The BIA recognises the significant social and economic value that boating contributes to Australia. With almost 1 in 5 Australian households owning a boat or some form of watercraft, and with approaching 1 million registered boats nationally, it's clear that enjoying time on the water is a fundamental part of our national identity. Beyond providing leisure and recreation, boating fosters community connection and promotes mental wellbeing. It allows people to escape the pressures of everyday life and immerse themselves in nature.

"Boating is more than just a pastime; it's a way of life for many Australians," Fielding explains. "It promotes active lifestyles, creates lasting memories, and strengthens bonds between families and friends. Whether it's fishing, sailing, kayaking, or simply cruising, boating offers something for everyone."

Economically, the boating industry is a vital contributor to the Australian economy. With a turnover exceeding $10 billion last year and employing more than 35,000 people, the sector supports thousands of jobs across manufacturing, retail, tourism, and related services. From boat builders and mechanics to marina operators and tourism providers, the industry generates significant revenue and sustains communities, especially in regional areas.

"The boating industry is a significant economic driver, providing employment opportunities and contributing to the prosperity of coastal and inland communities," Fielding said. "The Easter long weekend is a prime example of how recreational boating activity can boost local economies through tourism and spending on boating-related goods and services."

The BIA reminds all boaters to prioritise safe, responsible and enjoyable during the busy Easter period.

"A great day on the water is a safe day." Fielding said
