After more than four years of community fundraising totalling over £205,000, Freedom Boat Adventures is preparing to launch a groundbreaking accessible vessel on the River Blackwater.

Purpose-built to welcome individuals of all abilities, the boat will offer inclusive, empowering experiences to those who have traditionally been unable to sail.

Launched during the pandemic by Mersea Island residents Paul Button and Chris Dawson, the project was driven by a clear mission: to open up the water to everyone, regardless of physical ability, social barriers or complex needs.

"It's more than a boat. It's a floating symbol of what a community can achieve when it works together," said Paul Button, Co-Founder. "This vessel has been built not just with specialist materials, but with shared hope, commitment and vision from across Mersea and beyond."

Freedom Boat Adventures is fully accessible, featuring a wheelchair-friendly wheelhouse and an onboard accessible toilet - rare for a boat of its size. Every detail has been shaped with input from future users to ensure comfort, dignity and ease of access. The design also supports individuals with complex needs, creating a truly inclusive environment.

The project has attracted the support of elite sailors who understand the transformative power of the sea. Olympic gold medallist Saskia Clark said:

"I've spent most of my life by the sea, and I know how powerful it can be for wellbeing. Freedom Boat Adventures will open that experience up to so many more people in a truly inclusive way."

Paralympian and world champion Hannah Stodel added: "This boat puts dignity and user experience first. Growing up on the East coast gave me the chance to sail. This project could do the same for others and change lives."

The Freedom Boat Adventures team brings together a unique mix of lived experience, maritime expertise and community connection. Alongside co-founders Paul Button and Chris Dawson are two Non-Executive Directors who have helped shape the project: Sophie Weaver, an access activist with a career in inclusive practice across the UK and Europe, and Sebastian Shillaker, a highly experienced boat builder with decades of industry expertise. Their combined perspectives have helped ensure the vessel is both technically sound and meaningfully accessible.

Crewed by local professionals from Mersea's fishing and boating communities, the boat will also be supported by trained volunteers. Adults with learning or physical disabilities will have the opportunity to get involved, build skills and be part of the delivery team.

Backed by local fundraising, charitable grants and key partners including Suzuki GB, Sustain Fuels and PE, the project is now entering its final phase. Suzuki is supplying high-efficiency engines, while the boat will operate on sustainable biofuels, with solar power supporting its onboard electronics to minimise environmental impact. PE, a leading tech-first business solutions provider, has made a significant donation to help complete the cabin build and final fit-out. This support will enable vital accessibility enhancements, including a wheelchair-accessible ramp to the helm, adaptive steering controls, braille signage and upgraded safety systems.

Freedom Boat Adventures will offer a year-round programme of activities including:

  • Educational School Tours: Hands-on learning about local wildlife, marine environments and history, with stops at sites like Osea Island
  • Public Boat Tours: Inclusive trips combining seal and bird watching, storytelling and the chance to steer the boat
  • Seasonal Activities: From sea fishing in winter to shoreline discovery in summer, tailored for all abilities

Constructed using a specialist infusion process that reduces waste and improves efficiency, the vessel is a practical example of sustainable design. It reflects the project's guiding values: Educational, Accessible, Sustainable and Environmental - E.A.S.E.

More than just a vessel, Freedom Boat Adventures is a symbol of inclusion, resilience and community collaboration. With its launch just around the corner, it is set to transform access to the water for generations to come.
