The Dragon class sailing European Championship is coming to Helsinki, and the fleet is building fast. Already 61 teams representing 20 nationalities have registered for the event, taking place from 26 June to 3 July 2026.

The competition is hosted by the Nyländska Jaktklubben (NJK) at its home base on Blekholmen island in the heart of Helsinki's South Harbour. With entries still open, organisers are expecting one of the most internationally diverse Dragon fleets seen at Europeans in recent years.

The Dragon class — a keelboat designed in 1929 and one of sailing's most enduring one-design classes — has been contested at international level for over nine decades. This summer's edition brings that storied competition to the spectacular Baltic Sea waters off the Finnish capital, where the Race Marina sits just minutes from the city centre and the Race Course a few miles out in the beautiful archipelago.

World-Class Racing in a Stunning Setting

Helsinki's archipelago offers sailing conditions that are both challenging and spectacular, with shifty breezes that reward tactical sailors. At the same time, the backdrop of the city's islands and historic waterfront provides a setting few regattas can match.

Departing from the race marina in the heart of Helsinki, the boats will head out to the racecourse off Isosaari Island, approximately five miles away, passing the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—and other spectacular sights.

Following the practice race on Sunday June 28th, the actual racing is scheduled over five days (June 29th to July 3rd), with a pursuit of up to eight races and a discard system designed to reward consistent excellence across the fleet.

The regatta is sanctioned by the International Dragon Association (IDA) and organised in accordance with World Sailing racing rules, with NJK's experienced race management team overseeing all on-water operations.

A Championship Beyond the Water

NJK has created a rich social programme to match the quality of the racing. In addition to the formal Opening Ceremony at Helsinki City Hall, competitors and officials from around the world are welcomed to a variety of events—from a lively Crew Party to an elegant Championship Dinner.

The Downtown Race Village is open to all, offering plenty of ways to enjoy the event. Located by the water next to the Old Market Hall (Vanha Kauppahalli), this free public venue features daily programming from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, including classic yacht demonstrations, hands-on sailing activities, and games for both children and adults. Visitors can also enjoy music, food, and drinks throughout the day. Races are broadcast live on a giant screen with expert commentary.

In the evening, the Race Village transforms into a seaside open-air cinema, showcasing a curated selection of maritime-themed films. Screenings begin nightly at 7:30 PM.

Whether a lifelong sailor or a first-time spectator, visitors will find the Race Village a compelling window into sailing, summer, and maritime Helsinki.

The Race Village opens on Sunday, June 28 and concludes with the Prize Giving Ceremony on Friday, July 3.

Proud Partners of the Dragon Europeans 2026

The championship is produced by sailing club NJK, supported by the City of Helsinki and the Dragon Associations. The event is made possible by the generous support of four main partners: FENNIA, SKODA, NORDEA PRIVATE BANKING and CUTTER & BUCK, among Iittala, Fiskars, Sokos Hotels, Saari Jouko Lindgren, Ruissalon Telakka, Alfons Håkans, Nokian Panimo, SPV and other collaborating partners.

The organisers extend their sincere thanks to all partners for their commitment to the class and to the event.
