This Saturday the 13 April 2013 will see host to the 2013 Venetian Open with boats from across the country competing for the Venetian Cup. The Venetian Cup is one of the key competitions on the National racing circuit for the GP14 class of boats.
The Venetian Open begins with a welcome breakfast at the BTYC sailing club, Welsh Harp, and preparation from 0930 for competitors, with racing beginning at 1100. An ideal time for crews to meet each other and observe new boats, plan strategy for the day ahead. This pre-race period is also an opportunity to meet leading dinghy sailors from across the UK.
During the day the three races will be run from a committee boat overseeing strict start procedures according to Olympic racing rules. After the first race the fleet will be divided into "Gold" and "Silver" in order to make a large amount of boats competitive: Each fleet racing only against each other
The boats taking part are GP14's: a two handed dinghy with a mainsail, genoa and spinnaker. Designed by legendary British boat designer, Jack Holt, the GP 14 is one of the most sailed boats in the world with a thriving competitive UK circuit.
Sail London Initiative
The BTYC and Seahorse sailing clubs at Brent have launched the 'Sail London" initiative in 2013 in order to bring more people into RYA accredited training. Sail London offers members of the community across Brent and London the opportunity to sail GP 14 boats and Olympic class sailing dinghies (the Laser) and windsurf. Sail London intends to develop the skills of more people to take part in major competitive events such as the Venetian Cup.
