The first new marina in New York City in the past 50 years is now open on the East River, just south of the Brooklyn Bridge, with 100 slips for boats up to 200 feet and incredible views of downtown Manhattan. The marina, Oneº15 Brooklyn, is part of Brooklyn Bridge Park. It's just below the River Café, between Piers 4 and 5, and directly across the river from the South Street Seaport and the Fulton Fish Market.
More than five years in the building, the marina was delayed until the owners, Oneº15, a Singapore company, developed a new, proprietary, wave-attenuation system to reduce waves and surge inside the project. As anyone who has ever cruised on the East River or in New York Harbor can attest, the waters there, crowded with commercial traffic, ferries and some recreational vessels, can be choppy, confused and not particularly boater-friendly.
To serve boaters, and the broader Brooklyn (and New York) communities, the marina includes two new restaurants, which are both open now. One, Ebb and Flow, is a grab-and-go dining concept. The other, Estuary, is an upscale brasserie and bar, serving locally sourced seafood, meats and vegetables. It has a nautical theme and 150-seats inside plus a 48-seat outdoor café.
Oneº15 is incorporating a community-involvement program at the marina, including a sailing club, chartering opportunities and even a boatbuilding school. One quarter of the dock space is set aside for community activities.
The marina has restrooms and showers, and is now installing shore power and pump-out facilities. They hope to have the work done by winter; the entire facility should be a fully functioning marina - with some of the best views in the world - by the next boating season.
The Brooklyn marina is the first that Oneº15 has developed in the U.S., but the company is looking at other iconic sites for building more in the future.
