Socorro, San Benedicto and Roca Partida are three volcanic islands that make up the Revillagigedo Islands, commonly referred to as Socorro. They are part of the Revillagigedo Archipelago, a spectacular National Park located 250 nautical miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The Socorro Islands have been compared to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador or Cocos Island in Costa Rica because of the big animal encounters they provide, including giant mantas, humpback whales, playful dolphins, tuna and over 7 shark species, offering the most incredible up-close diving experiences on earth.
Our mission in Socorro was to explore the three islands of the Revillagigedo Archipelago to a depth of 200m using our C-Explorer 5 personal sub, to document whale sharks.
The research data and insights will provide valuable information on the secretive life of these gentle ocean giants that will contribute to their protection within the conservation area of the largest marine reserve in North America.
