OK Dinghies at Kieler Woche - Day 3

by Robert Deaves 29 Jun 12:12 PDT 27-30 June 2024

Niklas Edler, from Sweden, has taken the lead in the OK Dinghy fleet at Kieler Woche on the third day of racing. Jan Kurfeld remains in second with Steen Christensen up to third. 71 boats from seven nations are taking part.

It was another different day, with a long wait for wind and finally the first start at 16.00 when the wind filled in at 7-10 knots from the east. It took three attempts to get Race 6 away, with 11 boats pulled out under the black flag, including regatta leader, Bo Petersen, from Denmark.

Kurfeld led at the top, but Edler was soon in the lead to extend for the win, with Christensen in third.

Petersen then took the next two races, ahead of Edler and Christensen in Race 7, and then heading out Christensen and Sweden's Benjamin Hammero in the next. He ends the day in ninth overall, carrying the BFD in Race 6.

Edler goes int the final day with a nine-point lead and is currently discarding a seventh place from Saturday's final race. The top three would seem safe with a 33-point gap between Christensen and fourth placed David Bourne, from Britain. The forecast for Sunday is for typical Kiel weather: cold northerlies and rain.
