Update on Aspen Power Cat 10,000 mile tour: “Life is Good” on Sea of Cortez

It would be hard to find two happier boat owners than David and Sue Ellen Jenkins, who are enjoying life on board their 40-foot Aspen Power Cat in the Sea of Cortez, about halfway through their epic 10,000 mile tour from Seattle to Annapolis. Indeed, Jenkins just sent me an email saying that Mexico is a "great place, great people, great waters. Life is good."

Their partner on the tour, Capt. Blake Eder, Jenkins' brother-in-law and a professional delivery captain from North Carolina, flew home for a family wedding, so the Jenkins have been spending time on their boat, Knot Wafflen', in the La Paz area. They've taken some overnights to local islands, toured museums and swam with 20-foot whale sharks. "When in front of them snorkeling, it seems like they could swallow you whole," he said.

The Jenkins and Eder started out in Seattle last May and cruised up to Juneau, Alaska, before turning around and heading south. They've now put about 7,000 nm on the boat, powered by a single 435-hp Volvo diesel. And they've very happy with Larry Graf's proa hull design for the Aspen, saying it provides stability and fuel efficiency in all the conditions they've encountered along the Pacific Coast.

The Jenkins plan to keep cruising in the Sea of Cortez for another two weeks or so, when they'll take the boat over to San Carlos, remove the flybridge and put it on a trailer to Galveston, Texas. Then they'll climb back on board to resume the tour, heading around Florida, over to the Bahamas and returning to their home in Annapolis in time for the powerboat show there next October. For more:
