Volvo Penta's new 1,000-hp D13 diesel engine, it's most powerful ever, and its IPS1350 pod drive propulsion system just won new honours from Boating Industry, the boating business magazine, which named them among the top boating products of the year. The engine and drive system were introduced to the North American market at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat show last November.

"With Volvo Penta's major redesign to create the D13-1000 engine and its integration with IPS pod drives, the company created an impressive system with the consumer end result in mind," the magazine said. The engine and drives result in a longer cruising range, higher top speeds and reduced fuel consumption and emissions, it added.

The new D13-1000 and IPS1350 open new performance possibilities for boats up to 120 feet. They already are being integrated into models being made this year.

Jens Bering, VP of marine sales for Volvo Penta of the Americas, said the selection was an honour for the global Volvo Penta engineering team. "The D13 and IPS1350 systems offer a unique combination of features for larger yachts that make for a smoother, more comfortable journey with longer cruising range, a higher top speed, less vibration and lower noise levels," he said.

For the new D13-1000 Volvo engineers redesigned the 13-liter engine, including new pistons, more efficient injectors and improved cooling systems, resulting in 11 percent more power. With integrated IPS pod drives, the system produces the equivalent of a 1,350-hp engine. It is available in twin, triple or quad installations. With quads, the system has the equivalent of 5,400 hp.
