ABP Cadet UK National Championship 2024 in Plymouth - Overall

by Cadet Class 1 Aug 22:33 PDT 27 July - 10 August 2024

The climax (day 4) of the ABP Cadet UK Nationals was finally here! This has definitely been the sunshine Nationals, perfect weather for spectators and everyone supporting the young sailors onshore. However with winds getting progressively lighter during the event conditions have been challenging for the sailors, and the race officer, Arky.

Despite everyone's best efforts there were 3 races on day 1, 2 on day 2 and 1 on day three, and fingers and toes were crossed the sequence didn't continue into the final day. Unfortunately light winds prevailed and there was a single race on day 4, bringing the competition to an end with a series of 7 races.

The Cadets have definitely made a big impression here is Plymouth, never more so than when the 100+ boats grab the attention of locals and tourists watching from the breakwater and Hoe. With spinnakers flying whilst making their way to and from the sailing area in Plymouth Sound from the slipways of the Mountbatten Centre they are quite a sight, and full of the kind of energy you get when 200+ enthusiastic children get together. You can hear spectators commentating and spotting all the nationalities from the sails. David Simmonds has captured the Cadets making their return brilliantly in this video:

The final day saw sailors from the three fleets, Gold, Silver and Regatta competing for their last chance to improve their overall position. At the end of the final day the overall winners in Gold fleet were John Garner and Jack Benyan (Australia), with Yehor and Yurii Veretelnyk (Ukraine) second and third place going to Illia Donchenko and Anatolii Moskalenko (Ukraine).

The winners of Silver fleet were Alex McEwan and Harry Murphy McKie (Great Britain), with George Cox-Olliff and George Letts (Great Britain) second and third place going to Antoni Gabryszewski and Natalia Staniszewska (Poland).

The winners of Regatta fleet were Kyla Brezhan and Alex Nailer (Great Britain), with Hugh Voysey and Hannah Muir Wood (Great Britain) second and third place going to Charlotte Noren-Topham and Miles Hardy (Great Britain).

The highest placing GBR boat (4th) and UK National champions were Samantha Nee and Isabelle Davies. David Simmonds has pulled together a video montage of Samantha and Isabelle's award:

This brings to a close a fantastic Cadet UK Nationals, the first part of a two week Cadet sailing extravaganza. The UK Nationals has been enhanced with the many international sailors joining this year. The Cadet sailors are now looking forward to the ABP Cadet Worlds starting on 3rd August.

The Cadet Class are extremely grateful to the support of all our sponsors in particular Associated British Ports, Minerva's Virtual Academy, Stubborn Mule, Pure Storage, NFU Mutual, Royal Hospital School, GOAT Marine, West System, Optimum time, Exe Sails, The Cornwall Bakery, Stitchprint, Golden Duck, Indigo Concept, Clamcleat and Llandow Caravan Park. The event was run by Plymouth Youth Sailing, at the Mountbatten Centre for Watersports.
